Valentine’s Day Playdate

header collage 2

Prepping for a family Valentine’s Day has really been bringing extra joy to my life!  So today I’m sharing a fun idea to spread the love to the kiddos.

Some people refer to Valentine’s Day as a “Hallmark Holiday”.  When I wasn’t married and didn’t have kids I always thought that Valentine’s Day has so much hype and pressure.  While it isn’t my favorite holiday, I still appreciate that we have one day of the year reminding everyone to tell their friends and loved ones how much they mean to them.  Everyone could use a reminder now and then.

To honor this special day, invite your friends and their kids over for a fun playdate that parents and kids alike will enjoy.  You’ll need to have a few crafts on hand the kids can do without too much assistance like large foam hearts the kids can decorate with stickers.  This way, everybody can have a Valentine to go home with.  Ask your friends to bring an appetizer to share that goes with the theme.  Here are a few snacks that worked for me!  And a few that my friends brought.

Flowers, Teachers, and Big Boy Beds

Flowers, Teachers, and Big Boy Beds Restaurant night at school, PTA meeting, the 100th day of school celebration, Catholic Schools Week, Special Friends Day and mass, Girl Scout Meeting, and on and on and on.  Last week was a blur of activity!  With school-aged little ones in the house, it seems most weeks are like that .  But, I did take the time to smell these gorgeous flowers above from the flower section at Whole Foods.  It’s right next to the juice bar and they have been carrying freesia, lilies, hyacinth, and ranunculus lately.  Ahhh… ♥!

Here are a few other highlights from this week that added a little extra pep in my step.

Babies, Valentine’s Day, and the Tooth Fairy

Babies, Valentine's Day, and the Tooth Fairy

Love is in the air at Casa de Rino!  Adding seasonal flair to my home has been especially fun over the last several months because my kids have been getting so into decorating.  My daughter is always pushing me to get the decor out weeks in advance.  My son loves to go around and talk about each item.  It’s really sweet.  I save all the craft projects from the previous years the kids made and I really enjoy displaying them.  You can see last year’s Valentine’s Day decor here.

Table Topics and MLK Lessons

One of my happiest moments of the week came just last night at dinner with my hubby and kiddos.  We were using Table Topics to start conversations and I just loved all the responses.  It was such a fun experience to hear answers from my kids to questions like “Where is the most beautiful drive you’ve taken?”.  After that I asked my daughter to explain to her brother what she learned in school about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  I was very proud and very impressed to hear that what her teacher had explained to her had really stayed with her.  I volunteered in her classroom last week and was present for the lesson.  Listening to my daughter speak about how unfair those times were really touched me, I think Dr. King Jr. would have been very proud to hear that much passion from such a little person.  Who knew that Table Topics and MLK lessons could bring so much happiness?

Happy Moments and Healthy Weeknight Recipes

My happy moments from last week and Easy Healthy Weeknight Recipes

Happy Moments and Healthy Weeknight Recipes

At times life can be messy, frustrating, and sad, but I want this blog to be a bright spot on the internet.  I choose to spread positivity because I enjoy looking back and seeing the funny, ridiculous, upbeat moments staring back at me from my various social media platforms.  Sure, I could put all the negative self talk that goes on in my brain out there for all to read, but highlighting that wouldn’t make anyone feel good.  Let alone me, I don’t want to dwell in negativity.  I’m a firm believer that what you put out into the world comes back to you.  And I want good vibes to come my way!

My family will spend this Thanksgiving with other generations of our family eating way too much, reminiscing, and generally being thankful for every single person around our table and in our hearts.  It’s a holiday that’s near and dear to my heart because it’s not about gifts and material things.  It’s about remembering NOT to take our daily lives for granted.  It’s about being thankful for things like being loved, friendship, the roof over our heads,  and the food on our table.  I am looking forward to playing board games and pinochle, making new memories, and eating Mincemeat Pie.
