Self Defense and CVS Snacks

headerLast night I hosted the first ever Momtourage Safety Course with our expert, Hector Alvarez of Violence Prevention Academy – Alvarez and Associates.  It was eye opening and empowering.  Hector is a wealth of information and no topic was off the table.  I’m taking so much info from the course and applying it to my daily life.

This course was a lot of talking and a little bit of actual defense moves.  I really liked this style of course as opposed to other courses that were more “hand to hand combat” oriented.  Hector shared a ton of info with us, but let us ask a ton of questions too. That was the best part, I had each and every question answered.  We talked about everything from “What should we teach our kids to do if they get lost?” all the way to “Should I buy a gun?”.  All the answers were very illuminating and not exactly the answers I thought they would be.

The top three pieces of advice I learned:

  1. I am not the one: Meaning make yourself an unattractive target.  And he gave us tips to do that.
  2. Trust my intuition: If I see something that doesn’t “feel” right, call the police. Also, program your local non-emergency police station number into your phone.
  3. Pay attention to changes in my surrounds: NOT, “Pay attention to your surroundings” because it’s the changes that could threaten you.

Honestly, I could list a hundred little tips and tricks, but Hector explains it all better than I ever could.  Hector offers courses for women, moms groups, workplace safety courses, and school safety courses from elementary through high school.  To request a safety course with Hector email him: halvarez {at} workviolenceprevention {dot} com.  You can learn more about what a course with Hector can do for you here, and be sure to like him on Facebook for up to date information and tips.  Check out his website to see what Alvarez and Associates is all about.

CVS Snacks

So, this self-defense course was really great, but it was still our MNO!  Of course we had to have some great snacks and fantastic wines.  I brought a cheese plate and some Gold Emblem Abound snacks from CVS (℅).  I have to tell you that this entire line from CVS is absolutely delicious.  There are no artificial flavors or preservatives, have a short ingredient list, and (in most cases) are very low in sugar.  I’ve been sending my kids to school with these snacks in their lunches and snacks and they love them.  Get a $1 off coupon of any Gold Emblem Abound trail mix, cereal bars, or nuts here.

for goat cheese

Raw Almonds //  Superfruit Baobab Bites // Dancing Bear Honey

I also paired a soft Honey Goat Cheese with a mix of raw almonds and superfruit Baobab bites drizzled with honey.  The mix of the tangy dried fruit from the African tree (lauded for digestion for centuries) added such a punch of flavor to the creamy cheese.

Addittional snacks Baked Rice Crisps //  Heavenly Light Popcorn  //  Probiotic Trail Mix  //  Oat Bran Cookies

The rice crisps were delicious with cheeses.  They are light, airy, and gluten free.  Guests enjoyed snacking on popcorn, trail mix, and cookies.  The popcorn has been something my kiddos keep asking for!  It’s so light and airy with the perfect amount of salt.  They love to see a baggie of it in their school snacks and lunches.  The trail mix has raisins and craisins covered with a probiotic yogurt.  And the cookies were delicious.  I even sent someone home with a bag of them!

take aways

Superfruit Snack Bars // Pomegranate & Cranberry Snack Bars // Clif Bar Mojo and Clif Luna Bar // Health Warrior Chia Bar

Everybody went home with snack bars, super fruit bars, Clif Bar Mojo (℅), Luna bars(℅), and/or chia bars(℅ Target).  Special thanks to CVS, Clif Bar, and Target for sponsoring this months MNO goodie bags!  The moms loved them and Hector did too!  If you or your company would like to sponsor a goodie bag for one of our monthly MNOs please email me at mamamomtourage {at} gmail {dot} com.

Don’t forget to get your coupon before you shop: $1 off coupon of any Gold Emblem Abound trail mix, cereal bars, or nuts.

And a very, very special thanks to Hector for teaching us how to keep ourselves safe and defend ourselves if we have to.  It was an invaluable lesson!

XOXO
